Sustainability Policy |
In recognition of Goldberg Kohn's determination to provide first-rate legal services to clients while minimizing our long-term impact on the planet, we pledge to incorporate sustainable policies into our day-to-day operations and long-term strategy. In 2008, Goldberg Kohn created the "Project Green" committee to facilitate internal programs that help to keep our firm as "green" as possible. Accordingly, Goldberg Kohn has adopted the following initiatives to preserve non-renewable resources, reduce energy consumption, and promote awareness of the environmental impact of the firm's day-to-day operations: Recycling—We promote the practice of recycling appropriate aluminum, plastic and paper materials by placing recycling bins in all of our catering areas and copying centers as well as several of our conference rooms. All members of our organization are supplied with separate paper recycling bins and the paper in these bins is collected for recycling at the end of every work day. We instituted a battery recycling program and encourage all members of the firm to reuse office supplies. We also hosted a successful cell phone donation program. Paper Management—Because law firms use a significant amount of paper, we are vigilant in our efforts to limit our use of paper. All printers and copiers use 30% post-consumer recycled paper and whenever possible, firm notices and memos are distributed electronically. We implemented the use of duplex printing and are working to increase our capacity for two-sided printing in all departments. We continue to use electronic-only versions of many documents, and encourage employees to limit their use of paper documents without ever sacrificing the quality of their work. Purchasing Policies—In addition to purchasing 30% post-consumer recycled paper, we are integrating the use of office supplies made from recycled materials. We have begun using kitchenware made from post-consumer recycled material and utilizing catering vendors that provide organic and locally grown foods. We continue to reduce the use of non-paper materials by working to re-use and recycle as many products as possible, including using durable products to the maximum practical extent and avoiding artificial or toxic products when more natural alternatives are available. Reduction of Waste—In an effort to reduce the amount of waste produced by the firm, we have purchased mugs and glasses and encourage members of the firm to utilize them for refreshments in place of disposable containers. The firm has stopped serving bottled water and provides filtered water in our kitchen areas and during all catered meetings. We also use eco-friendly cleaners and detergent. Reduction of Energy Usage—We utilize compact fluorescent bulbs as our primary source of lighting. The lighting in our private offices is controlled by motion sensors and all common area lighting is turned off at the end of each work day. Our office has an energy efficient HVAC system equipped with individual temperature controls as a means of achieving greater energy efficiency. We use energy-saving devices and practices whenever possible, and encourage employees to conserve energy by shutting down computers and monitors when not in use. Encourage Eco-friendly Transportation—We encourage employees to consider environmentally friendly modes of transportation. |
