Feedback and Reviews

Our expectation is that every Goldberg Kohn associate will become a productive principal.  Because we train each associate with an eye toward this long-term goal, the annual review is both backward and forward looking so that it is not only a candid assessment of the past year but also a discussion of the associate's progress toward principalship. 

Formal associate performance reviews, including a determination of associate bonuses for the preceding year, are conducted annually.  Every supervisor with whom an associate has worked over the course of a year completes an evaluation of the associate.  The principals discuss these evaluations in detail for each associate in their respective practice areas.  A full principals' meeting is then convened to discuss the individual progress of each associate.  Two principals then relay a summary of the evaluations to the associate in a manner designed to provide a private and objective appraisal of the associate's development.  A major focus of the annual review is an analysis of the ways in which the associate can continue to improve and grow as a lawyer.  While this is a time-consuming review process, it is vitally important to the firm's principals that they all monitor the development of every associate in the firm.

In addition to the formal review process, we ensure that our associates are informally reviewed and trained as part of the daily routine.  We encourage and foster a supervisory approach in which associates receive prompt and informative feedback on the work they do.  A vital aspect of this approach is an "open door" policy, by which principals make themselves available to discuss issues associates are confronting.  Such a system allows for the rapid growth and development of our associates into attorneys capable of handling every situation. 

Both at the annual review and throughout the year, associates are encouraged to discuss their own long-term goals and plans.  This feedback allows each associate to address concerns or particular interests on an individual basis.  Every associate is different, and we do everything in our power to tailor the associate experience accordingly.
