Training

Goldberg Kohn associates gain experience largely through doing, through exceeding expectations for attorneys of their tenure, and through learning from each success and challenge.  Skills are polished in practice; but more senior attorneys also nurture associates' progress through formal and informal lessons, both at the firm and through outside programs.  The training opportunities at Goldberg Kohn allow unique development of legal ability and confidence among our associates.

Goldberg Kohn associates are not limited by seniority in terms of the amount of responsibility they are given.  For example, we generally staff each matter with one or two associates.  This allows young attorneys to undertake roles and projects that may be beyond the reach of their counterparts at other firms, and our associates often find themselves working with other parties' more senior lawyers.  Thus, the design and philosophy behind Goldberg Kohn's practice provides our associates with ample and constant opportunities to learn and develop new legal skills.

In addition to significant hands-on training, we offer numerous internal training sessions for associates.  Normally organized by practice area, these sessions provide forums for senior members of our firm and other experts to deliver valuable knowledge and suggestions.  Examples of these formal programs include bi-monthly seminars led by a Goldberg Kohn alumna, covering all topics of commercial lending; and new associate and continuing litigation classes that foster a smooth transition into practice, as well as regular enhancement of knowledge and skill.  While each Goldberg Kohn practice group tends to have its own method for providing formal lessons to associates, all such programs help associates develop into the successful lawyers they want to be.

Informal training focused on individuals and on discrete topics permeates life as an associate at Goldberg Kohn.  Given constant interaction with principals, our associates are able to draw upon the experience and wisdom of the firm's more experienced members on a regular basis.  We encourage associates to ask questions and to formulate their own strategies to resolve the matters on which they work.  In turn, Goldberg Kohn's principals take the time to explain "why" in addition to "what."  Whether sitting across a desk, standing in the hallway, or trading e-mails, Goldberg Kohn's senior attorneys are available to provide daily lessons and suggestions.

The firm encourages associates to continue their legal education through outside training programs, as well.  As tangible evidence of such commitment, Goldberg Kohn pays for associates to attend both in-town and out-of-town seminars each year.  On some occasions, associates are able to attend lectures and classes at which Goldberg Kohn lawyers are leading the discussions.

Finally, all attorneys at Goldberg Kohn attend in-house seminars on harassment and receive training materials and drills regarding workplace safety.  We have developed a variety of programs to foster a professional and secure working environment.
