Work Assignments

Associate and principal members of our Summer Committee collect assignments from attorneys in the firm and allocate them to the summer associates through a centralized distribution system.  We pay special attention to the type of work in which each summer associate is interested and also to the assignments on which each summer associate has already worked.  This way, we can nurture particular interests and also ensure that the summer associates are interacting with a variety of attorneys, in many different areas of the firm.  Projects are a mix of long-term assignments, which permit each summer associate to work closely with one or two lawyers on an ongoing basis; and shorter, more discrete projects, which provide the diversity of work experience and lawyer contact that is important for a successful summer.

Our transactional practice groups have staffed summer associates on a variety of corporate, real estate, and domestic and international commercial finance deals.  These assignments allow summer associates an opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the transaction, from conducting due diligence, to drafting, to negotiations.  Litigation-oriented assignments for summer associates have involved drafting motions and supporting memoranda of law, drafting briefs in opposition to substantive motions, preparing jury instructions and deposition outlines, assisting in the preparation of witnesses for deposition, and researching and preparing strategic legal memoranda that are sent directly to clients.

Perhaps most importantly, in litigation and transactional work alike, summer associates' work is not completed in a vacuum; summer associates attend trials, hearings, depositions, client meetings and closings on matters in which they have worked.  By setting high expectations for our summer associates and giving them real responsibility, we offer a genuine opportunity to learn how rewarding it is to be an attorney at Goldberg Kohn.
