Goldberg Kohn Joins the Scholarship Chicago High 5 Initiative
Goldberg Kohn and Winston & Strawn have joined the "High 5" initiative to provide low-income Chicago students with college preparation and scholarships for four years of higher education.
High 5 involves a financial commitment of $11,000 a year for five years. The first $5,000 goes to college preparation coursework during the senior year of high school, and $50,000 goes for the scholarships over four years.
The program is part of Scholarship Chicago, which provides financial help for low-income students from around the city. Leaders of the program include Mayor Richard M. Daley, Cardinal Francis George and prominent lawyers like Manny Sanchez and Gery Chico. More than half of the students who receive scholarships -- those displaying academic potential to excel -- come from families with annual incomes of less than $20,000.
"Becoming a High 5 sponsor allows us to greatly increase the educational and work opportunities of underprivileged high school and college students, and that, in turn, will create a more diverse workforce in the legal field," said David Chizewer, a member of Goldberg Kohn's management committee.
