Amanda Penabad is an associate in the firm's Litigation Group. Prior to joining Goldberg Kohn, Ms. Penabad served as a law clerk to the Honorable Robert W. Gettleman of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
Ms. Penabad received her law degree, with honors, from The University of Chicago Law School in 2012, where she was awarded the Joseph Henry Beale Prize for Outstanding Performance in Legal Research and Writing, the Thomas R. Mulroy Prize for Excellence In Appellate Advocacy, and the Donald E. Egan Scholarship. She served as the Topics and Submissions Editor for the Chicago Journal of International Law and as a member of the Hinton Moot Court Board. Ms. Penabad was a member of the Federal Criminal Justice Clinic, where she represented a federal felony defendant at change of plea and sentencing hearings, and briefed and argued a Seventh Circuit sentencing appeal. She received her B.A. in Economics and Spanish Literature from the University of Virginia in 2007, where she was a Jefferson Scholar.
Ms. Penabad is a member of the Trial Bar in the Northern District of Illinois. In 2016, she was part of a team that tried an 18-day bench trial before the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board. In that matter, Ms. Penabad conducted the direct examination of a company witness, developed direct and cross examination outlines for multiple expert witnesses, and second-chaired all other aspects of the trial. Also in 2016, Ms. Penabad represented a federal felony defendant in a jury trial, conducting the opening statement and cross-examination of multiple government witnesses. She is currently scheduled to try another federal criminal jury case brought against former C-level executives accused of corporate fraud and embezzlement.
Ms. Penabad's work includes assisting the United States Department of Justice and State Attorney General Offices in civil fraud investigations and litigation in the defense and health care industries. In connection with this work, Ms. Penabad has conducted client and witness interviews, and drafted disclosure documents for submission to the DOJ.
Ms. Penabad is admitted to practice law in Illinois and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. She is a member of the Chicago Bar Association and the Federal Bar Association. Ms. Penabad also serves on the Young Professionals Board of the John Howard Association.
