What types of cases do you handle most often?

I came to Goldberg Kohn in the Fall of 1996, and my career expanded to all types of litigation, including bankruptcy, commercial, employment, lending, pro bono, restrictive covenant, trade secret and workout litigation. Over the last seven years, a lot of my work has involved constitutional litigation, which has been both fascinating and active, with three trials in state and federal court, oral arguments in trial and appellate courts, and litigation before the U.S. Supreme Court.

What is the best professional advice you have ever received?

Litigation is a tool to achieve a business’ objectives, not our client’s business. It is easy as a litigator to get caught up in efforts to prove your case and try to “win” on the merits. And sometimes we have to win, so being confident in your ability to map out how to resolve the case in your favor is essential to being a great lawyer. But a win is not a “win” if it costs too much, is too distracting to the client’s day-to-day business, or fails to achieve what a settlement could have accomplished.

When you’re not working, what do you do to unwind?

I am a passionate cyclist, predominantly road cycling with Colavita Chicagoland out of Deerfield. But I also like getting onto the Des Plaines River Trail and riding along the river through the forest preserves. Riding is very meditative, clearing my head and exhausting the body. It is the ideal activity to de-stress from the busy life of a lawyer.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I just became the president of Makom Solel Lakeside, a Reform Jewish congregation in Highland Park. While not part of the job description, it’s helped me become more spiritual. When two of my asylum clients wanted to get married, I decided to get licensed as a Universal Life minister. I just officiated their wedding in the lobby of our law firm on my birthday a few weeks ago. It was the most meaningful birthday of my life.
