The Chicago Bar Foundation and Chicago Bar Association recently recognized the late Frederick H. Cohen, a Principal in the firm’s Litigation Group, with The Edward J. Lewis II Pro Bono Service Award. The award honors attorneys in private practice committed to providing equal protections and equal justice in the community through outstanding pro bono service.

Throughout Fred's distinguished career, he was dedicated to eliminating the barriers to justice for low-income children and families. One of his most notable cases, for which he served as lead trial counsel, was a class action lawsuit on behalf of 600,000 children eligible for Medicaid. The trial resulted in a landmark decision vindicating the rights of children to health care.

Fred also served on and became Chair of the Board of the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law. His wife, Dana Cohen, accepted the award at the 12th Annual Pro Bono and Public Service Awards Luncheon held on July 13 in Chicago.
