Alexandria Filush has been honored with inclusion in The Secured Lender's Annual "Women in Secured Finance" issue, published March 2023. The list features 65 inspiring women who "exemplify excellence and have distinguished themselves within the secured finance industry." They represent the various sectors of the Secured Finance Network's member organizations, including banks, law firms, appraisal and consulting firms, fintech companies and institutional capital providers.
They were honored as part of the publication’s theme, Recognizing Excellence, which highlights women who have had a significant impact on the industry’s future. In the issue, Alex shares the best advice she has ever received and talks about the role that mentorship has played in her career.
"Mentorship has been hugely important in my career. I would encourage all young professionals to seek out mentorship relationships."
One piece of advice she shares was given to her by a senior associate (now partner) at Goldberg Kohn after they closed a deal together.
"She explained that people (usually women) often reflexively apologize as a way to smooth over tension and promote harmony and cooperation, but that others can read apologies like this as admitting to making a mistake," says Alex. "I hadn’t realized that by apologizing when I hadn’t done anything wrong, I was undermining the image of competence and professionalism I was trying to convey. Apologizing is appropriate when a person has truly made an error, but this advice taught me not to unnecessarily diminish myself in my professional communications — a lesson that is important for all people (and particularly women) to learn at the outset of their careers."
Alex also stated that, "Mentorship has been hugely important in my career. I would encourage all young professionals to seek out mentorship relationships and ask questions when a new issue crops up or a second opinion would be helpful."
