Richard is widely known as a pioneer in the field of cross-border lending, helping banks and other financial institutions respond to the rapid globalization of their borrowers. He regularly represents lenders in structuring and documenting complex cross-border credit facilities. He is also active in secured transactions law reform initiatives, serving on the Expert Group on various projects for the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), and is a Lecturer in Law on cross-border lending at The University of Chicago Law School. Richard also serves as Co-General Counsel of the Commercial Finance Association, which is the principal U.S. trade association for asset-based lenders, and is a Fellow on the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers. In addition, he is Chairman of the Brain Research Foundation, a 60-year old non-profit organization that funds innovative neuroscience research.

Chambers Global lists law firms and attorneys who are strongly recommended from in-depth interviews with peers and clients. Rankings in the directory are assessed on specific criteria, including technical legal ability, professional conduct, client service, commercial awareness, diligence, and commitment.
