On June 15, 2026, Goldberg Kohn Litigation Principal Chip Mulaney will moderate “A Duty to Use, But Not Overuse? AI Discovery Tools and the Rules of Ethics for Criminal Defense Attorneys,” a CLE presentation hosted by Goldberg Kohn.
Joining Chip on the panel will be Todd Pugh from Breen & Pugh, Jeff Stone from TrailKit, and Wendy Muchman from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law. Together they will examine the expanding use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in criminal defense litigation and the ethical questions around their adoption.
As AI-powered discovery platforms continue to reduce the time attorneys spend reviewing documents and evidence, the discussion will explore both the benefits and limitations of these technologies. The panel will address concerns related to AI hallucinations, missed nuances in document review, cybersecurity threats and the growing responsibility attorneys face when incorporating AI into their practice.
The session will also cover the increasing use of AI discovery tools within the public and federal defender offices, as well as the potential impact these technologies may have on defendants' Speedy Trial and Sixth Amendment rights.
